Eric Hubbes is a young Franco-German artist who leaves and works in Cologne and who has been exhibiting his unique artwork in Europe and Asia since 2017. His colorful but tormented style, between control and improvisation, is the result of a lengthy process that goes back to his childhood.

As early as age two, Eric Hubbes started to show interest and a natural talent for drawing…which soon led to its first painting on canvas when he was only ten. He nurtured his talent until college where he complemented it by learning graphic creation techniques. This was a key period for the artist who started to skip lessons, realizing that he preferred his autonomy to his own studio.

This quest for freedom defines the artist’s style; and now that he masters the techniques, he can play with it. The artist will embark in a spontaneous and frenetic creation of artwork, sometimes following a clear path, sometimes purely improvised, but always inspired by its own life experience, memories and thoughts. Eric Hubbes likes to quote Pablo Picasso, as like him, he would never start a painting if he already knew what it would look like at the end.

For the artist, it is always a question of inner life. Multiple shapes and layers of colors are blended in an organized chaos to give life to a face or an animal, often times uniformized by the recurring use of spiraled shell.

Influenced by the artist’s mood, every artwork takes part in a heterogenous universe. Mecenavie will exhibit some of the artist’s unique work during ArtExpo New York from April 4th to 7th and at Art Shopping Deauville from April 20th to 22nd.

Luc Dartois was born in 1970 in Paris and was very early in showing exceptional abilities in graphic creation. As he graduated from business school, he finalized his first painting. The same year, he launched Dallay, his own publishing company. He will work there until 2009 when he decided to go back to what he truly loves.

Painting has always been a questioning for the artist. He seems to have been early influenced by Maurice Denis, a Nabis painter: “One has to remember that a painting, before being a battle horse, a naked woman or any story, is really a flat surface covered by a range of colors”.

Les colonnes, 90 x 105 cm, Mixed medias, 1996.

Luc Dartois is essentially going back to basics, but this is only to better divert and play with the fundamental painting techniques, with all the discipline and technique it requires. A canvas becomes a flat surface where colors are organized to create the illusion of an image. The coloring pigment becomes the vital element that is trying to mimic real textures.

The artist’s technique is unique: each material serves a real purpose and represents what it really is. Real sand will be used to depict a beach, some bark for a tree, cement for a building…The artist will patiently and meticulously produce his artwork, always favoring quality over quantity, often spending up to 12 months on a single piece.

Je te salue vieil Océan, 42 x 50 cm, Mixed medias, 2017 // Quais de Seine – Pont Royal, 60 x 46 cm, Mixed medias), 2018.

Once finished, the canvas becomes a unique blend of textures and colors that takes the observer in his own world. Lights are thoroughly mixed for an optimal and puzzling visual impact.

Luc Dartois will be with Mecenavie and exhibit his unique artworks at ArtExpo New York from April 4th to 7th. Don’t miss it !

The Centre Pompidou’s public library is hosting Riad Sattouf’s artwork until March 11th. The comic strip author has been multiplying projects and successes for almost 20 years but has always refused to exhibit in galleries, considering paper as the only support of the “9th Art”.

What else better than a public library to discover the artist’s universe, where the pictorial and the text are always serving a precise narration. The concept of “drawn writing” is the thematic of the exhibition as the author is telling stories as it was a movie, the drawing and the text replacing the picture and the sub-titles.

Riad Sattouf : The drawed writing. Credits : Pompidou Center.

His biggest success, “The Arab from the future”, perfectly illustrates his style. Mostly based on the author’s memory, the autobiographic series depicts the author childhood. On one side, the drawing, sensitive and sometime flawed, features intimate people and places from his childhood. Color is used as a code to help the readers: blue for France, yellow for Lybia, pink for Syria, green for Guernsey and red for your imagination. On the other side, the text is here to puzzlingly and precisely describing facts, anecdotes or thoughts.

Sketch – The Arab from the future #1 – Riad Sattouf.

The exhibition is split in three main parts and is centered around that connection between drawing and literature. It highlights how artistic the author’s approach is, and how it is fueled by his personal and sensible interpretation of the real world.

Agnès Pormenté lives and works in Paimpol, a village in Britany with seaside landscapes, abrupt cliffs, and green paths. A paradise for the artist, who likes to contemplate, observe and pay tribute to nature.

And what a tribute! Each artwork is photographically but also sensitively true to these fascinating landscapes. Soft and luminous, Agnès Pormenté’s compositions immerges us into a world where nature is as stunning as it is immutable. We can rest there, leaving the tumult and the hassle behind us, replenishing our spirit, as we were actually facing the beauty of the landscape.

Agnès Pormenté – Golgotha

Art is the story of Agnès Pormenté’s life. Her childhood has always been animated by music and paintings. From the Ecole Normale de Musique de Paris, she used to regularly visit sculptor Madeleine-Pierre Querolle’s studio. She will finally decide to pursue a high school teacher career but never far from the practice of painting.

She uses pastel with her fingers as she would be playing the piano. Nature becomes a moving, harmonious and colorful sheet. The artist never put herself forward and she says: “She learnt from music how to serve a text, an author, or others’ inspiration by stepping aside”.

Agnès Pormenté, Cascade (1), Majeur (2), Force, sollicitude et protection (3) – Pastel sur papier.

But the eye and the hand remain autonomous interpreters and we recognize a work by Agnès Pormenté to its vaporous treatment of matter, its pigments filled with light, its subtle details.

Welcome to 2019! We have tremendous art exhibitions coming up in France, Europe and in the United States. What about joining us?

Our first exhibition of the year will take place in New York from April 4th to 7th. ArtExpo, one of the biggest and famous art fair in the world, will celebrate its 41st anniversary. Once again, Mecenavie will be there with its talented line-up of artists. Maori Overstreet’s urban woman touch, Julian Villalba’s subtle portraits, or Eric Hubbes’s poetic and psychedelic universe, just to name a few…

Chantal Canuet started painting in 1990, and since then, has never stopped from studying art history and its practice. Being both assiduous and passionate, she soon became a productive artist, whose style, nourished by a great knowledge of the discipline, is both unique and very personal. Her artwork is often composed of large paintings, where the chromatic mix of shapes, textures and colors always surprises.

The sacred parenthesis, acrylic on canvas, 80 x 100 cm. Chantal CANUET.

So, what does her art tell us then? In fact, the artist use of complex pictorial indices creates a fascinating confusion and the mix of figurative and abstract leads us to a unique interpretation of every paintings. This fusion of color and shapes is reaching our subjective consciousness much more than our objective knowledge. Whenever we think we are in front of an abstract, a barely visible human outline would get us out…and vice et versa.

The lifted veil, acrylic on canvas, 54 x 65 cm. Chantal CANUET.

Nathalie Lescop-Boeswillwals, PdD in Art History, describes the artist’s artwork as a questioning on our collective consciousness. Being in front of her artwork takes us to our own unique path, it is no longer a question of “seeing” but “being”. Sometimes, the paintings’ titles can help or at least raise a question: “The twilight of the gods”, “The lifted veil”, or “The sacred parenthesis”. Always poetic, these titles guide us to what really animate the artist: spirituality, fantasy and inner life.

Back to the sources, acrylic on canvas, 80 x 100 cm. Chantal CANUET

This quest is as passionate as it is universal. Chantal Canuet has exhibited all over the world for more than 20 years. Alongside Mecenavie, the artist will present her unique universe in November at the ART3F art show in Bruxelles and in December at Art Spectrum Miami.

ART3F Bruxelles, from 23rd to 25th November.

Spectrum Miami, from 05th to 9th December.

At first sight, the “Halle Saint Pierre”, nestled at the bottom of the Sacré Coeur, impresses by its architecture. The mix of red bricks and the metallic structure is reminiscent of Paris history. Inspired by Gustave Eiffel style, it was first built for the Universal Exhibition before being used as a garage.

Credits : Halle Saint-Pierre

In 1986, the Halle Saint Pierre is rehabilitated into a museum, whose radical and innovative artistic line will be dedicated to the “Art Brut”. This artistic movement was founded by Jean Dubuffet in 1945 and has now a unique place in the world of art. It can be best defined as a form of art for those who are not ruled or influenced by any other artistic line and who are not even recognized as artists, even by themselves…

Marie SUZUKI, Bara Bara So Waka, 2014, Paravent, stylo, 172 x 357 x 1,5 cm. Artist collection.

Jean Dubuffet first interaction with this form of art goes back to his visits to psychiatric hospitals and rural or working-class neighborhoods. Their creations come from a pulsion, or as a way to kill the time, but never with the aim to be recognized as artists. Instead, they are a reflect of the artists singular personalities. This salutary introspection through drawings and paintings is a silent testimony of their existence.

Takayuki AYAMA, Bœuf noir, 2013.
The Art Brut is sincere, tortuous, and deeply human. It raises many questions but never makes people indifferent. Its aesthetic inspires many artists, arouses art collectors and passionate art lovers. It has today a significant place in world exhibitions and the Halle Saint Pierre naturally holds a privileged position.

From September 8th to March 10th, the Halle Saint Pierre will host a collection of Art Brut from Japan, home to many unknown Art Brut great artists, who are inspired by the country drawing culture heritage. The first part of the edition took place in 2010 and was a big success. This second edition will be more global and diverse as a way to highlight that each culture has its own artistic way. More than 40 artists will be exposed in what is likely to be a unique Art Brut exhibition.

David Twose, a Franco-British artist, can be considered as a painter of contemplation. He likes to look at his surroundings, from cities and landscapes to people. Since his early age, his eyes have been fed by his travels and but also by paintings from artists Poliakoff, Bonnard or Hockney.

But the one artist who changed everything was Matisse. Then aged 16, David Twose saw “The Danse” for the first time at the “L’Ermitage” museum and it was a revelation. He was deeply touched by the generosity and radicality of this painting; three colors that represents a sky, a floor and five moving bodies. David Twose saw in this painting a form of opening towards a new, beautiful and true world. The artist, who likes to observe and understand was then on a quest to make those complex imbrications of colors more visible. David Twose, the painter, was born.

David Twose, who observes deeply everything that is around him, is inspired by nature as by cities.

His artistic career started relatively late. He studied business and finance in France before graduating from a business school in Montreal. His first job was as in communication in a car company. In parallel to his studies, he learnt abstract painting with Jacques Vigot, and brought a more figurative approach to the “Grande Chaumiere” Academy. David Twose benefited greatly from these two different paths. Painting took a greater place in the artist’s life over the years and he decided to leave his firm when he was 41.

Dawn, 27, 5 x 27, 5 inch, oil on canvas. David Twose, 2018.

David Twose now lives from and for painting. His vision, between abstract and figuration, weigh in constructions and patterns from the real world in a view from Paris, a nude or a landscape. His more subjective art, inspired by the concept of memory and its shortcomings, is a form of re-activation of this first step: this is what he calls “Abstractivation”. David Twose’s sensible and colorful art stimulates the eye and our curiosity but is really trying to reach our heart.

David Twose will exhibit with Mecenavie at the Thuillier gallery, from August 31st to September 6th, with the public opening on September 1st from 6:30pm to 9pm.

Mecenavie’s art fall season is just around the corner with its two flagships Parisian events, in the heart of the Marais district and at the Carrousel du Louvre!

From August 31st to September 13th, Mecenavie will exhibit its artists at the Thuillier gallery. In the heart of the dynamic and eclectic Marais district, the Thuillier gallery has been a favorite meeting point for artists, galleries, designers, art lovers and professional buyers for more than three decades.

The timing of the exhibition could not be better. This is back to school, when Parisians are coming back to the city of light and are mixing with the latest summer tourists. All are in a positive and fresh state of mind which will be hopefully conducive to new acquisitions!

Art Shopping will take place a few weeks later, from October 19th to October 21st, at the Carrousel du Louvre. For more than 10 years, the fall edition of the flagship art show has kept on garnering more success every year. The affluence of art lovers and professional buyers has done nothing but growing in the convivial and friendly atmosphere which characterize the Parisian art exhibition. Mecenavie has been an historic partner of the art show which will once again prove its qualitative and acute selection of new and original exhibitors.
