Jonathan Kanku: A heart the color of Africa

Jonathan KankuFormer composer, graphic artist and rapper Jonathan Kanku has been working as a visual artist, sculptor and designer since 2011. Jonathan started his studies at Kinshasa’s School of Fine Arts in 2005. He draws inspiration from his childhood and everyday life in Africa. His piece, La Jokambi (left), symbolizes the life of Jonathan Kanku Mbiya. The multidisciplinary artist also sculpts the culture of his native country, the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The artist has “always worked hard to be respectable.” He uses the sorrow and melancholy that he has experienced since childhood in creating his work, with each piece more poignant than the last.
