Stéphane Catalano: When gold becomes a veritable work of art

Stéphane Catalano

Born in Versailles in 1960, Stéphane was attracted to the two-color printing process at the age of 11. He used Indian ink to draw comic book characters, landscapes, animals and abstract graphics. He was particularly inspired by the architectural splendor of the Château de Versailles and its gardens. After many travels, he settled in Spain, where he started working for a firm of gilders and ornamentalists, creating pieces through the application of gold leaf. This was a moment of revelation for him. He began to meld the artistic mix of his Indian ink drawings with techniques used to apply gold leaf, resulting in an artistic style that is completely different from what can normally be seen in Stéphane’s creative work.
